“I have just finished the Happy Heads Retreat and really cannot recommend it highly enough. As someone with a chronic neurological condition I have suffered with worry, self-doubt and anxiety most of my adult life. Kim delivers the sessions in a very calm and gentle manner and she has such a reassuring way about her which really helped me to believe I could achieve what I wanted to. The retreat left me feeling truly empowered. If you want to make a change in your life then I urge you to try it for yourself."

TAPPING ON UNCERTAINTY

The world is a bit of a crazy place to live in right now because so many things are uncertain and if you read the news your brain will be filled on a daily basis by things that can make you feel overwhelmed, anxious and panicked (I stopped reading it a while ago for this very reason). The 'unknown' is a very common anxiety trigger because the brain can easily think up the 'worst case scenario' and then the mind starts to believe what it's imagining and that creates more anxiety - it's a dangerous spiral to go down. The difficult thing about this particular anxiety trigger is that we ultimately don't know what the future holds because we're not mystic meg with a crystal ball. We have to find space within ourselves to be comfortable with uncertainty and start to gently rewire your neurological pathways to believe in the positive possibilities that the future may hold.

Tapping is a powerful way at bringing your whole nervous system back into the present moment and bringing stillness to your busy mind. It's the perfect tool for reducing anxiety, so why don't you try it now for 10 mins?

WHAT IS TAPPING AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

What is tapping and how does it work? This is a question I get asked a lot and something i'm always very passionate about answering. I've been an Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping) practitioner for nearly 7 years now and the results I see with my clients never fails to amaze me. Seeing the huge realisations and shifts that they have is always so inspiring. Even during group workshops and retreats when I have no idea what anyone is personally working on tapping has powerful results.

WHAT IS TAPPING?

Your body is filled with a very complex nervous system that is connected to your brain my something called the vagus nerve - your mind and body are completely interconnected. Where these energy (meridian) lines begin and end they are closer to the surface of your skin so you can physically tap on them to release the negative tension that you're holding in both your body and your mind.

Tapping is based on the combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. It's also part neuro linguistic programming (using your voice to rewire your brain) which is why it is so powerful at helping you overcome your anxious, negative thoughts and it's amazing at helping you get to the core route of a problem. You're bringing your nervous system back into balance by physically tapping on your body while enabling your brain to process whatever it is that you are working on. You're healing the body AND the mind at the same time, which is why it's so effective.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The basic Tapping technique requires you to focus on a negative emotion or specific problem at hand. This could be an anxiety, negative belief, fear, phobia, grief, worry or any difficult emotion or situation that you want to work on. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, you then use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on 9 specific meridian points of the body.

THE PROCESS

Identify the issue you want to work on

  • Rate the emotional intensity of the feeling on a scale of 0 - 10

  • Tap on your karate chop and repeat the statements...

  • "Even though I have this (insert problem here)______________ , I love and accept myself anyway"

  • "Even though I have this (insert problem here)______________ , that's ok, i'm human"

  • "Even though I have this (insert problem here)______________ , I love my body and I love my mind"

  • Then move around the points of the body using language connected to the issue (e.g "this anxiety, this tension in my body, it's exhausting, its holds me back..."

  • After two rounds take a deep breath (in through nose out through mouth) and rate the intensity of the emotion

  • Keep doing the rounds until your number has reduced. Use language that directly targets the problem and only move to positive affirmations when it has reduced.

7 MINUTE TAPPING MEDITATION

Do you struggle with meditation? Do you find it really hard and often want to give up? You’re not alone! We have such busy, distracted minds these days that most people find meditating really tough.

Tapping is a wonderful way to meditate when the more traditional routes aren't working for you. The physical movement is incredibly grounding, which is why so many people find it more beneficial at focussing the mind on the present moment.

This is also a great meditation technique for any adult or child that is on the spectrum. The rhythmic tapping can often feel like a much more affective way to calm the nervous system rather than trying to sit still, which may have the opposite to effect.

Watch this video to see a 7 minute Tapping Meditation (suitable for all ages) that will help calm and soothe both your body and mind.

COLLARBONE BREATHING

Collarbone breathing is an INCREDIBLE tool for relaxing your nervous system - quickly reducing stress, anxiety and overwhelm. Watch this video and i'll guide you through. You can do this where you breathe in fully rather than half way but i've seen people do it a few different ways and really like the breath going in gradually - do what feels right for you!

During the Collarbone Breathing Exercise, keep your elbows and arms  away from your body. The exercise uses your knuckles and fingertips;  these should be the only parts of your arm that touch your body.

With the first 2 fingers of your dominant hand, tap the  Gamut point (in the groove in the bones that anchor the last two  fingers) continuously while you perform the following 4 breathing  exercises.

1. Breathe half way in and hold your breath for 7 taps.

2. Breathe fully in and hold your breath for 7 taps.

3. Breathe half way out and hold your breath for 7 taps.

4. Breathe fully out for as long as you can while tapping

Then place the first two fingertips of your dominant hand on your  non-dominant side's Collarbone point and, while tapping the Gamut point  continuously, perform the same 4 breathing exercises.

Bend the fingers of your dominant hand so that the knuckles of the  2nd joint stick out. Place them on your dominant side Collarbone point  and tap the Gamut point continuously while doing the 4 breathing exercises. Repeat this after placing the knuckles of your dominant hand  on the Collarbone point of your non-dominant side.

You are now halfway through the Collarbone Breathing Exercise. Repeat  the same procedure starting with your non-dominant side.

Let me know if you guys like this one :)

REDUCE ANXIETY QUICKLY

.
When you’re feeling anxious it’s because your body has started to go into fight and flight mode with your amygdala (brains fear response) hijacking your brain. Watch this video to see a simple way to bring your nervous system back into balance AND directly target the worries you have about the easing of restrictions.

STOP WORRYING

worry.jpg

If everything seemed to be going great in my life I genuinely used to worry that, if I didn’t worry - something bad would happen. Put your hands up if you do that! This is 100% an anxious thought and not something that your brain needs to think.
.
I’ve now worked on this particular negative thought, so I’m able to quickly reframe my thoughts if ever it starts to creep into my mind. For me personally I know it comes from losing my dad at the age of 7. Before that I never worried about bad things happening and then something bad did happen - so this is why I used to have this anxious thought.
.
A great way to reduce the intensity of your negative thoughts is to identify where it may have come from. Become a memory detective and see if you can make any links - gently reflecting back. Don’t worry too much if you can’t make any links, you can still reframe your thoughts.
.
Always remember that there's no need to worry if things are going smoothly in life - you deserve to be happy. Life can always throw you curve balls but it has no correlation to whether you worry about it or not so stop the worry and trust the process.

THE NEGATIVITY BIAS

Screenshot 2019-07-24 at 13.01.59.png

Have you ever found yourself ruminating on over a past comment or mistake? We tend to dwell over negative memories far longer than positive ones. The reason being - negative events have a greater impact on our brains than positive ones. This is often referred to as our ’negative bias’ - exhausting right!

“Our tendency to pay more attention to bad things and overlook good things is likely a result of evolution. Earlier in human history, paying attention to bad, dangerous, and negative threats in the world was literally a matter of life and death. Those who were more attuned to danger and who paid more attention to the bad things around them were more likely to survive. The evolutionary perspective suggests that this tendency to dwell on the negative more than the positive is simply one way the brain tries to keep us safe” - Kendra Cherry ‘Very Well Mind’

The next time you find yourself ruminating over the past - take a minute to STOP, PAUSE & BREATH. Remember that this is an evolutionary brain process that you no longer need to succumb to there is no perceived danger. Ruminating over the past is a guaranteed way to create anxiety so focus on the present moment to strengthen your neurological pathways and reduce your worries. The body and breath are amazing tools to help anchor you in the moment - use them as often as you can.
